50cc Blata rep issues

I am in the process of building a watercooled pocket quad.
Went to start the engine today with no success at all. Engine is 50cc, some mild porting from previous owner, standard reeds and standard exhaust. Did fit 19mm rep carbie. Could not start what ever I tried. It did seem to barely run with throttle 3/4 open but would not rev and basically just had enough rpms like it was idleing. Can these be hard to start?? Smelt like it was overfuelling. Check for spark all good. Even changed them throughout the day.
Decided to pull the engine apart just to check. Put it all back together cleaned it all with the excess fuel. This time I fitted a standard 14/14 carb. Still would not start at all. I spent the whole day just chasing and swapping parts. Adjusting idle, mixture, and spark plugs.
I am not sure what to do next. It just won't start. All parts were pull apart and cleaned especially the carbs.
Any assistance appreciated to stop me from torching this.

Standard reeds could be a problem. Make sure they are sealing properly. Otherwise it coulee your coil is too close to the flywheel. Space it out with a business card.

Yeah, it's always the little things that stuff you round.

Thanks Claw will try that this weekend.

ZXTimmy it is only for bashing in the bush with the kids. That engine sounds great but to over the top for what I am doing.

All good mate! I've been there with rep engines and got fed up with fixing them instead of riding them! All the best with the project!

Couple of other suggestions though...
If your coil spacing is correct do you have a spare one laying around? I've had a problem before where the coil was on the fritz, with a plug out and checking spark everything looked good but could not get it to fire or run properly. Swapped out the coil and problem solved.

It also sounds unlikely but first thing I'd check with that 19mm carb is if it's nice and clean with no blockages, it seems unlikely that you had issues with the 14/14 but never know?

One last thing, and sounds like a silly question - but do you have good compression? Holding the throttle 3/4 open may have just been pumping enough in there to keep it just ticking over but soon as you shut it off it dies... could be due for a top end freshen up?
