| | | tuning stand
Just wondering if anyone had tried to make their own tuning stand using a cyclists wind trainer. Long story short its a stand that you hook your bicycle into and by pedaling you have to spin a fan. The faster you pedal the harder it gets.
I have a walbro that tuning would be heaps easier on a static stand. Being able to hold full throttle and turn the screw at the same time would be great.
Attached is a pic of the devise or similar that I intend to use.

Hi Coolie..they sure do..they need to be tuned under load...How ever the walbro carbies can be a pain to tune at top end and anything would help to tune them if you can get them up to the rev range.

That was the idea rover.....to tune under load for the high end and the mid range adjustment. When reading into it they say to tune flat out running first (high end needle) then hold at 3/4 and tune the low end needle then reduce to 1/2 tune again then hold 1/4 and tune again. This is something that would be infinitely easier on the said stand.
I know they are designed for use with a road bicycle with a 27" wheel so I am going to have to cut and shut it on the rear arm to reduce the distance between the axle holder/mount and fan roller.
I would be very surprised if it hasnt already been done by someone out there.

hey ringo
i think in theory that would work as long as the bike doesnt overload the the fan also you would either need to be sitting on the bike or strap it down to the stand to hold weight on the back wheel against the rollers. like a dyno pretty much if you dont have enough weight on the back wheels on the rollers they have a tendency to want to jump off.

I thought about a tread mill but you would probably tear it. Oh... and sirlc6 you wouldnt have to weight it up because the axle is fixed in so it wouldnt make any difference. the roller part is spring loaded usually on an excentric shaft.
Just thought I'd throw it out there......seemed like a good idea at the time. If I'm successful I'll post pics for all to copy.

see no reason why it wouldnt work but i dont think theyd load a pocket bike up enough. peddling on mine isnt *too* hard so i imagine a 4hp cag or whatever they are wouldnt be loaded up too much. maybe if you had an old strap brake like the electric scooters have you could slowly tighten it onto the axle of the wind trainer and slowly load it up

DEFINITELY make sure you have the bike tied down to the stand, perhaps with straps around the front end and over the seat. Otherwise, you'll nail the throttle, and have to go get the bike out of your neighbor's living room ..... Putting a strap over the seat should work for putting the bike under load, if you are able to adjust the tension on the strap one notch at a time.
Neat idea - let us know how it works.
