Tire Combo? Concrete or Aspahlt? Whch is better?

Good day

Hi I am new here to the forum. I've been wanting to get involved in the scene for a long time, and after watching some of the youtube races recently its become an itch.

I am trying to find some information regarding tire combinations and track surface and which indoor track surface is better to race on.

I read somewhere that some riders where having trouble finding grip with concrete surface using PMT tyres (had to use lower pressure in tyres) and recommend using Chinese slicks rather than the expensive brands.

Just curious whether these claims are true and whether its best just to stick with Chinese slick in this condition.

Do slicks to need to get up to temperature for them to work properly? Do slicks get up to temp on an indoor concrete surface track? I mean concrete floors are usually cold unless the air temperature is warm. If so how many laps considering the length of track is 200m - 300m long would it take to get up to temp?. What about in door asphalt tracks?

The asphalt tracks are prone to cracking and sweat and out under the sun in outdoor conditions. Do asphalt tracks sweat if it was uncovered?

Basically what I am trying to find out is which track surface is better for racing on and what tires are best given the conditions.

I want to organise an event in the future and am deciding whether to use an undercovered concrete track, undercovered asphalt track or outdoor asphalt track? This will also determine which tires to use.

Cheers guys

Swee

Asphalt is the surface of choice for all circuit racing. PMT 41 would be a recommended starting point for slicks. Concrete indoor tracks are a bit iffy, especially if they have a bit of oil or water. All slicks work better when brought up to temperature. That's why people use tyre warmers ;-)

Thanks for the reply. Just got another question is there any particular asphalt surface that is most suitable. There are many grade and types of asphalt from course to fine (smooth and flat even surface).

true that. I guess we can't be picky.

Part of the reason I opened this thread is I would like to get peoples opinion. I am looking at the possibility of building my own track. Indoor preferably. Just trying to figure the cost at the moment and initial costs to build one if it was app. 300m long x 5m wide. Don't know how thick yet. Obviously the land has to be graded, compacted and filled in for proper solid foundation to lay the asphalt.

I would be great to hear from people who have raced and their take on different types of asphalt surface ranging form porous rough to fine (sealed).

I remember riding on some super smooth seal asphalt road back in Perth, Albany Highway, Victoria park towards the foreshore. they have some sexy length of road there. One of the smoothest in town. I remember rollerblading down that road. I'd tell you it felt awesome, no noise, no irregularities in the road, rocks, pebbles, nothing. Perfect. You could just glide effortlessly. Curious to know whether this types of surface would be better.

Cheers.
