dead spark plugs?

heres a bit of a topic out of interest.

i got a motor going after some fairly epic porting to get the power where i need, and had a hell of a time starting it. turned out it had a 105 jet and just flooded everything.

i noticed the spark plug was rife with oil and fuel but even after i lightly sanded it off the spark plug never sparked again..

i tried another and did end up flooding it in frustration again lol, this time i just rubbed the oil off with a rag and yet again that ones dead. finally got the fuel aired out and working.

but was curious why flooding the motors seem to kill the plugs even after i get the grime layer off

Hey glen did you clean down inside the plug. This is where your prob might lay. Papering the plug only cleans the end. Carbon build up or crap from the fuels these days can acumulate on the plug and change the course of conductivity (lol my big word of the day.) We find a lot of dead plugs in brand new Honda and Victa mowers due to customers mowing with the choke partly on. The plug is dead from black sooty carbon build up. We are finding at the moment some manufacturers machines do not like premium fuels, its causing the plug to fail. No one is sure why, but maybe some fuels have so much additives that its burning out the plug prematurely or additives are leaving a layer on the plug. Is it possible after the porting you have some localized heat issues around the plug?

interesting ill try pick out the crap at the base of the plug,

it wasnt the porting because i didnt even get the bike running before it killed the plugs. i squirted 5ml of fuel down the carb to try get it over and thats whats flooded at least one of the plugs :S

I've seen them stop working in brand new mowers that have done less than 2hrs work. I use a light bulb test light that goes between the plug and the lead. This tool is ace. Easy visual way of seeing spark. Looks really cool if you leave it on at night. LOL. I also use a tool with an adjustable gap. A good coil will jump a 6mm gap. Also colour of spark is important. Blue spark is the only one that is good. White or red spark is useless. It wont work when you put the plug in.
