| | | Walbro 257 Kit - A1!
Well today i recieved in the mail my walbro WT-257 kit for my CAG ....
worth every penny!
ever since i got the bike i've been screwing with the stock carby trying to get it to do what i wanted with very little luck! ... running it on methanol i sorta got working ok, then once i worked the engine it just turned to crap again.
i've put the walbro on with 50/50 petrol/methanol (as thats what i was running prior to the walbro) and it goes better than ever.... once i run out of the 50/50 mix i'll be tuning for straight methanol!!
the WT-257 has no choke so its a bit of a prick to start, but once you get it going it works fine and has great throttle response and just all round feels great!
what i like about the 257 is that it doesn't need the return line and doesn't have the primer bulb which wont work with methanol!
and finally i'd like to give Goped and Pocketbike Discount Sales - Dave's Discount Motors - Great prices and top-notch service! a plug, they have first class quality parts and they ship VERY quickly to Australia!! everything fitted perfectly straight out of the box!!

Whoa dude. Your asking for trouble running 50/50 petrol and methanol. Methanol won't mix with petrol.
But man great decision on getting the WT-257 I've wanted to try one for awhile not but i've been a little hesitant as I'm unsure whether they can flow enough AIR for my engine. At least they've got the fuel situation covered and that's what matters most.
Is that an alcohol carburettor you have there or the ordinary petrol one ?

Crash Dummy, the only problems i had with petrol and methanol was getting castor oil so it would mix with the methanol .... otherwise its stayed mixed fine as far as i can see ... but i don't want to have to mix it all the time, hense why im gonna go straight methanol once i use what i have already mixed up.
its not specifically a methanol carby, the only thing really that makes it different from the others is the primer bulb .. i got one of these off a whipper snipper with a primer bulb and stuck it in methanol for a while to see what would happen ... after a few hrs the primer bulb was starting to break down and eventually split etc .... all the other gaskets and parts were fine, hense why i got the 257 as it didn't have the primer bulb.

Actually I think I do recall now. The primer bulb isn't the only difference between the petrol and alcohol carbs. The alcohol versions I am pretty confident also run a metering diaphragm made of a different alcohol safe material. The main membrane for the fuel pump and one way valves in the fuel pump side of the carb is probably the same deal also.
The alcohol diaphragm has a yellow woven tinge to it if I'm not mistaken.

That's it mate If she fails it either won't pump or it'll pump fuel everywhere!!! Either way you won't miss it.

well i've had the first real use of the walbro over the weekend .... went to metford TAFE carpark with a mate, damn thats good fun to fly around!
anyways onto the carby .... after a bit of tuning i soon found what seemed to work best, goes pretty well, didn't have any top end lean outs like the stock carby did, all in all, very happy with the walbro kit, some fine tuning with the throttle linkage and it should be 100% sorted ....
got through all the petrol/methanol mix and now i've set it up to run straight methanol, but i haven't yet been out with it .... definately seems to have a loss in top end compared to the stock engine and carby on straight methanol, and now i have modded engine and carby with less top end .... not sure if its the carby or that it wasn't on straight methanol, but anyways, see how i go with some more testing soon.
