After I enlarged the reed opining of my cases, those flutes protruded more like 8mm into my intake port. I have ground them back so the intake port is smooth.
I figure at least 3mm is just a chauffeured edge to help slide the piston and ring/s into when attaching the barrel. The flute is there tho to stabilize the piston at BTC. I read Trevor say it is fine to grind it back, the piston may slop a bit more at BTC, so you will want to do more regular piston and ring replacements than you normally would.

sloppy piston you say? All pistons slop, some more than others. It's not as bad as it sounds.
Here's some pics of my cases not quite finished. I don't think I got any photos of the barrel after porting.
