How to install your triple stage reeds correctly

They say pictures are worth a thousand words so I am going to save a lot of keystrokes.

This is the wrong way. And the way I've seen every example to day assembled this way.

You can see that the triple stage reed plate is mounted directly against the main fibre reeds. in effect by setting the reeds up this way you end up with just a set of extremely stiff reeds with no triple stage function. There is constant hard pressure being placed on those reeds and they really really don't want to open at low engine speeds at all.

Now this is how they are meant to be installed. See that little plate that was mounted on the top of the triple stage plate on the first set of pictures. That is actually mean to be placed between the main fibre reed and the triples. By doing this you are setting the reeds up to perform effectively. The as you can see the reeds are now really only resting against the fibre reeds. The first stage allows a single petal to open easily and a slight amount for idle. The second reed petal has quite a lot of tension placed on it so it only starts to really open once the engine is humming along. Once you get much above low engine speeds the first petal starts being affected by the triple stage plate and has more tension placed on it as it opens further.

I hope this helps.
Gary

P.S
Disregard the hole in the bottom of my reed plate. That is there for an experimental modification I have done to my bike.

ok this is how i had mine installed with the small plate as a backing plate & triple plate angled away from the main reed

i guess its up to you weather you use the small plate as a backing plate to protect the reed from the screw heads & help apply a even pressure across the reed
or as a spacer between main reed & triple plate
as you can see in the pic the cheap china generic ones tend to break the smaller reed off

Well if your correct crash dummy i glad i found that thread today, cause i was about to install these reeds this arvo and had them setup the other way.
BTW i noticed in the pic with the restrictor plate that it was changed around so the bigger part of it was on the left of the reed block instead of the right like in the first pic, does it matter which was these go around?Cheers

Honestly i don't know if it makes a different. I wouldn't have thought so but I could be wrong. If you want to be sure about it just put it on the other way.

I dont wanna start sumthin here but in my own opinion I would rather run them the "not correct" way.. Because if you look closely at the "correct" way, you can see the black reed plate bent and pushing the reeds down. But as with the "non correct" way it just sits on top of the reeds. Iv been running them the "not correct" way and it runs fine in the lower revs, even on idle.

But remember this is just my opinion.

What Azzfox has said has me wondering now. Perhaps reed sets made by different company's vary greatly enough that the same install method does not apply to all.

IMO Theo. Try it both ways and use whichever way works best for you.

the reed fibre plate can be installed either way, top or under. the opening pressure is not much different. i prefere the wrong way in pic.

The spacer is between the reeds and the shutters.
They open easy for torque and at high hrpm`s they get slammed shut
as if they were stiffer reeds. Both limiter/shutters are tensioned different
to keep the power curve strong right through the rev range.
I have tried them all ways against another bike as all my testing is done.
The way i have mentioned gave the best results against 2 bikes that were so close untill the reed was fitted correctly. The 2nd bike was set after initial tests and it also was able to keep up again.

My opinions and tests u do not have to agree
