Exhaust burnt through fuel tank...please help

hi there,
i just recently bought a pocket bike on ebay. that week end i took it for a ride at a track. i had been riding for around 2 hours. i then had a break and tried to start the bike up again but it wouldnt start. after my friends dad had checked to see why it didnt start he realized that the exhaust had burned through the half full petrol tank. the fule tank is a few milimeteres higher than the exhaust and the only thing holding the fuel tank up from lying on the exhaust is the fuel cap which is tightly screwed on with my friends pocket bike there fuel tank is protected from this because of the way it is built ( structural frame). i just recently bought a new fuel tank on ebay from a different seller. i also just bought a fuel filter from super cheap auto and i was wondering if you could tell me how i could, 1. protect the fuel tank from being burnt through by the exhaust, 2. how i would attach the fuel filter to the pocket bike.. what parts would i need to buy to attach it to the bike
thanks
jonty

RD RACING is an unknown quantity at this point
you need to insulate both the section of the pipe that is close to the fuel tank plus insulate the base of the fuel tank, exhaust wrap is used for the pipe section and for the fuel tank base you can use an insulation product available from plumbing supply shops, this has a sticky surface one one side and shinny foil on the other, i can,t think of the name used. also the filter you purchased should go on where the old one came off, push on fit both ends.

i had similar problem with my 1st cag,u have a few options,1*,u could buy a couple of feet of exaust wrap from any exaust repair shop, wrap it round your exaust(u need to wet this stuff 1st,then tie it on with some wire)let the engine idel till the exaust bandage dries,or 2*u could fabricate up a peice of sheet metal,i used galvanised,to cover or go inbetween the exaust and tank,or 3* u could buy a different exaust/tank to suit,or u could do both step 1 and 2(bandage/sheet metal light gauge will do fine).
when this happened to me,i wraped an old welding glove around the pipe, not a good idea, when i stopped after some hot laps,i thought my balls were on fire as the smoke was bellowing out everywhere, the glove died a fiery melting death.

place the fuel filter anywhere between the fuel tank and carby on the main fuel hose line. also go to the [pocket bikes classified ] section and have a look at [cag for sale] you will see some pics of some excellent heat shielding to pipe and tank, thanks to Razzor.
