Very High Performance Air Filter

Hey I was racing my friend he has the same bike except diff. name and color but all the parts and everything look identical. But I beat him in a race twice (i weigh more). Then today he took his air filter off and replaced it with a piece of window screen with oil on it. He killed me right off the line and through the whole race today. I have a high performance reed valve also and he doesn't. Is this bad for your bike? If not how come they aren't made like this?
Thanks
