Definitive guide to carb tuning

Well i think this thread will be apporpriate - i scanned every forum on pocket bikes known to man both english german and italian and cant find the answer i need. so ill make this thread

basically what do you do if you have a carb that is so far out of tune you have no base line and no general jetting guides? i.e. putting a 17.5mm phva on a reverse motor (im not but for example)

what do you look for?? eg.

How do you set the idle mixture, what on earth do you look for? most carbs seem to idle okay after you adjust it a good 3 turns or so

how do you know if the idle jet is the right size? what happens when its too big or small?

what affects does the wrong needle or wrong needle setting have?

and what affects can a main jet too large or small have?? can it affect the operation through idle to full throttle or only full.

and so on.

there just seems to be no solid info that says, OKAY look for this when your setting them up or this is what happens if you stuff up this setting etc.

seem most companys think the carbs should work perfect right out of the box which im sure they may do on some bikes. unfortunately my pair dont lol :P

perhaps the geniuses of the forum can chime in and we can make this a sticky sometime?
