The "my bike wont start and/or leaks" thread

Since we get a lot of “my bike won’t start” and “my bike leaks fuel” questions I thought I’d start a thread which could maybe be a sticky or used as a link to these frequently asked questions.

Firstly, if your bike wont start.

The first and easiest thing to check when the bike will not start is the spark. To do this you need to remove the spark plug and with the lead attached hold the plug to an earth (anything metallic) and pull the cord. The spark should jump between the centre of the plug and the earth electrode. The spark should also be blue in colour. A yellow spark indicates a weak spark. If the spark is fine then move to the next step. If there is no spark, replace the plug with an NGK or Champion as the Chinese plugs are ordinary to say the least.. If still no or weak spark then you may need to re-gap the coil or it may be faulty.

The next step is to check for fuel. The easiest way to check if there is a fuel or carby issue is to pour a coke lid of fuel down the spark plug hole or spray Aerostart down the carby. Try to start the bike. If it starts and runs for a little bit then there is a fuel problem. If this is the case you will need to remove the fuel bowl drain screw with the fuel tap in the ”open” position and check there is a constant stream of fuel coming out. Refer diagrams…

If there is no fuel then replace the fuel lines (repco etc) with proper fuel hose and also replace the filter (any mower or motorbike shop). It is recommended that these be replaced prior to starting the bike for the first time regardless and also clean the fuel tank. If still no fuel is coming from the bowl plug then the fuel tap is blocked and needs to be drilled out. To do this remove the 2 screws and run a drill bit through the centre making sure to blow any swarf out. Also an inline fuel tap will need to be fitted (mower shop).

If still the bike will still not start and run under its own fuel then the bowl and float will need to be removed and cleaned. Also the main jet will need to be blown out preferably with compressed air. Once this has been done the bike should run. Refer diagram…

If your bike leaks a lot of fuel out the overflow hose when the tap is in the on position, then there is something under the needle and seat and needs to be removed. To do this remove the bowl and float. Remove the float arm retaining pin and the needle. Clean the bowl, needle and seat thoroughly and re fit making sure the bowl gasket is sealed properly.

I hope this helps people and if there is anything I have forgotten or can be contributed, post up.

Cheers Gabe
