Running Rich

My bike is running really rich and im not sure why. My bro thinks it is the carby and he is probably right. We first tried a fuel mixture of 25:1 and than we changed it to 50:1 still running rich. We are using Stihl 2 stoke oil. Anyone got any ideas? oh and it seems to run really good when it is just about to run out of fuel.

Would really appreciate any ideas.

RD RACING is an unknown quantity at this point
running better when just about out of fuel does mean [ lean ] this is normal with any 2 stroke engine when the fuel supply is restricted. atleast your engine is running rich which is good i many ways. i would be checking these; your fuel mix [ is it the correct 25 to 1 mix ] is you sparkplug set with a good pod spaceing [ not to open ] the list can go on but i would start with fuel mix and plug gap first. you can try raising the carby internal needle clip so the main needle goes down to a lower position.

I did check the gap and it seems to be fine, the reason why i am concerned about it running rich is that it barely hauls at all, which is a bit annoying. Nissan i did do what you said and the end of the plug is very dark, it is obviously running rich, the main give away is the amount of blue smoke it is blowing out the exhaust. It has a larger head on it, 14/14 dellorto rep carb and fatboy exhaust on it. the head looks similar this one http://www.pocket-bike-racing.com.au...p?do=big&p=795

Where abouts is the needle that allows you to adjust the fuel mixture (make it run leaner)

The 14/14 dellorto replica carby doesn't have a needle that u can adjust, that is for the standard carby that comes with the cags. The only way to lean the dellorto rep carby is to try a smaller jet. The jet is very easy to change. U will need a jet kit which has a selection of 6 sizes to try. Don't get genuine dellorto jets as they have a different thread to the replica jets and won't fit.

Mate it depends if you have the older style dell rep or the newer model, the older 14/14 runs bigger threaded jets that are the same as the jets that run in the standard watercooled bike carbys.
The newer 14/14' reps you can run the genuine jets no probs,(thats the 1 i have atm),i also had an older one which was proving to be a hassel to get jets for
Hope this helps

OK, I just learnt something, thanks. I must have an old rep as my genuine jets do not fit.

How do I tell if it is older or newer? I might have to ask the guy I bought it off. Today I checked the fuel lines and they arent clogged, the fuel filter has a bit of muck in it but not to much. Checked the fuel mixture about three times yesterday and it seems to be fine. There was some dodgy wiring done by the original owner, but me and my brother fixed it properly but it didnt help, still runs like shit. But it is always good to sort out dodgy wiring.

there is 2 styles of delloto reps, jets in the 14/14 the age is irrelevent some have a 5mm thread which is the standard and the genuine jets eill fit and the other has a larger thread which i havent needed to measure ...
but the thread for the genuine jets is 5mm 0.8 thread
and that is used in the 19mm reps too
