Heat Wrap???

I was thinking about buying some heat wrap for my exhaust i herd it helps with heat alot and gives better performance i read this on the net:
Keeping exhaust heat inside your exhaust pipes maintains exhaust gas velocity, helps to increase combustion scavenging and thus increases power.

can someone tell me if im wrong or not??? and if its worth $30 for 5m of it

cheers
darryn

Heat wrap works in extreme temperature applications on cars.. Mainly to keep under bonnet temps down.

Pocket bikes don't suffer nearly as much as alot more fresh air circulating the engine. You could actually find it will have an opposite effect on your exhaust keeping heat IN which is going to in no way help in making power and as mentioned could actually do damage.

If you use heat wrap on your pocket bike the only thing to gain is keeping the fuel tank cooler and your bum against the heat from the exhaust. You are half way to being on the right track though. The heat wrap is very much worth it for wrapping around things that you want to save from being cooked from heat. It works very well as an insulator to block heat but not so much from preventing it from radiating from the source.
A good thing to do if you can do it on the cheap is get a fire blanket apparently and secure it to the bottom of the fuel tank and your seat area on the under side of the top fairings. By doing so you block the heat that gives you the hot nut and buns.

If you were to wrap the tuned pipe itself your will cause great harm very quickly. Think about it this way. I'm sure you have a pretty good idea how hot the pipe gets even with fresh cool air flowing over it. Now imagine how hot it is going to get if there is no air flow at all. Not a thing and there is no where for the heat to radiate. Under the right conditions you can superheat the metal and actually melt it assuming it doesn't rust and break up on your first.

Scary stuff hey ?

Finally I'm not convinced that I would ever want to keep as much heat in my exhaust on a 2 stroke anyway. Remember there is fresh air and fuel mix getting dumped into there as well which needs to be blown back into the combustion chamber by the return pressure wave from the expansion chamber.

hi mate,, just thought i say a few things about heat wrap
i have a fat boy and have it heat wrapped but only for the
reason so it does not burn through my fuel tank. but i only have it
wrapped to were it goes under the tank not anywhere else
i have heard good things and bad thing about heat wrap that
its the best thing to keep the heap in the exhaust and that means
more power coz the heat does not escape but also heard bad things too
but i have had mine wrapped for over 6 months now and have not had any
problems at all, i take mine out once a week and go pretty hard with it
and the bike it still sweet.
hope that helps ya some what
cheers

Thats fine because the pipe gets a chance to cool. Its just bad to have the pipe wrapped around the header area. From the header you can easily heat the metal to it's failure point.
