Do you need to be a mechanical genius to put a new head kit on to my air cooled cag? Is it something that someone with a little experience should tackle or should I just buy a prebuilt engine? Also is there any head kits that come highly recomended??
hey benny like glen said they aren't hard just take your time keep your working area very clean make sure you put back every thing that comes out as far as internal parts go
ive heard that rd does a good head kit but we do a pretty awesome kit ported with full circle crank as well have a look

Cheers for the advise. Ill have a crack at one next week. dunno about the full circle crank tho. I might just leave that up to a pro. Ive done a bit of reading up on squish and the like and it seems pretty straight forward. Ill let you know how it goes.
Maybe just look at techniques to fitting piston circlips and piston rings. Also what to do when fitting the bore over the piston with rings fitted, ie. compressing the rings. Other than that its just doing up nuts and bolts mate! Unless the kit is not pre. squished, but you can always check that with playdoe.
the main things are carefully installing rings the rite way up as they only go one way.
arrow on piston pointing to the exhaust port or front of bike.
making sure c clips are correctly seated once installed.
compressing rings when fitting cylinder.
& keeping all parts bearings well lubricated with 2 stroke oil at least or even better a small tube of engine assembly grease.
the squish will vary on every engine no matter if its preset or not as each crankcase deck height will vary, this is why they usually supply one or more different thickness base gaskets & some of the better kits come with a thin copper base gasket also.
i usually aim for 0.7mm so a good set or vernia calipers is well worth having
make sure all bolts have a even tension but do not over tighten, as the alloy is soft & can strip easily, so tight or firm with a little locktight is usually good enough
also on the piston where the ring grove is in side that grove there will be a bit of round metal make sure when ur put the ring on that the join is on either side it stops the ring spining and getting caught on the ports or so ive been told
