anyhoo no surely if the reeds were removed then the engine wouldnt have any chance of running, as there would be no compression, because as soon as the piston comes up instead of compressing the air it would push it back up the carby, yah?
cheers

I have not finished reading these posts but thought id jump on this before i forgot.
believe it or not a 2 stroke can run with no reeds and even more believe it or not a hole in the crank case.
how do i know this, my old honda oddyssey had a 250cc air cooled 2 stroke motor, with no reeds and a hole in the bottom of the crank case at the edge of one of the halves about 1" long and 3/8" wide. it also had a bent and misaligned crank shaft... still ran pretty good but kept breaking the exhaust and engine mounts.
so in short. reeds and a sealed crank case and a good exhaust really only help put air/fuel mix in the combustion chamber. they dont actually "make it run"
